Day 48
This afternoon we were all sitting on our back porch taking turns holding each one of the puppies, making sure each one got a turn to be held by each of us. For quite some time, there was no talking amongst the humans, just individual conversations with the puppy currently in our lap. This has been a common event for us - sitting together with the puppies. We have done this whenever we have had the opportunity over the past several weeks.
But today was different. We all knew that our time with all the puppies is coming to an end. Although we hope to stay in touch with the puppies and their families, we recognized that this might be one of the last times we sit together with all of them. They will be heading to their new homes, where we hope they will be cherished and loved like we love them. But it's a tough lesson for all of us....to love something and let it go. CD said, "my head understands but my heart feels like it is breaking into a million pieces". As a parent, you hope that you will know the right thing to say at these moments....well, all I could muster was "I get it, I feel the same way." So luckily for my kids they have a brilliant father who said " I understand, but think of all the happiness and joy you are sharing with all of the families that are adopting the puppies, he did the math with the kids and figured out how many lives they will touch and by the time the conversation was over, we all felt better! So I quickly marched everyone to the front porch and had a friend (who was coming to our puppy farewell party) take this photo so we would always remember today!
